The Mercuria GYTR Team Yamaha race team made the trip across the Irish Sea to the
fantastic Porters Pit circuit near Desertmartin, for the 4th round of the 2007
CCM British MMX Quad Championship. Using the full GP circuit at the famous venue
and with beautiful weather over the weekend, the long trip was not in vain, Joe
closing the gap to the championship leader to one point after returning to the podium
once again, and Leon finishing a fantastic 6th overall. Race one
After posting 4th fastest time in timed practice, Joe got a dreadful start in
the first moto, stalling the bike on the line and getting away second last. With the naturally
wide sandy circuit providing more overtaking opportunities than most, Joe quickly set off in
pursuit of the leaders. With the Lonestar / Ohlins suspension gliding over the bumps and transferring
all the power to the Goldspeed clad Douglas rims, Joe set a blistering pace over the remaining
fourteen laps, amazingly making up twenty four places to come across the line in 4th position!
Leon was also having a great race. After posting 12th in timed practice, Leon got good drive off
the line and headed out on the first circuit in 6th. After making a small mistake and slipping
back to 7th, the Balgonie bullet held his nerve and showed maturity beyond his years to regain two
places and take the chequered flag for a fantastic 5th position.
Race two
As the field headed out on their first lap, Leon was running in the middle of the pack in 15th.
With the track now rougher than in the first moto, passing was proving to be a greater challenge, but
undeterred the young Scot put in another gutsy performance, working his way gradually through the pack
to take a deserved 8th at the chequered flag and 6th overall on the day. Joe did not make the same
mistake in the second moto, quickly moving off the line and settling in to 6th place. Now settling
in to a rhythm and battling hard with the trio of Ricky Toye, William Waggott on the KIK Honda and
Paul Holmes on the ATV World Yamaha, Joe passed all three and continued to close the gap to Paul
Winrow on the Interlock Lonestar Honda, but time was not on Joe's side and as the chequered flag came
out after 13 laps, Joe had to settle for 3rd place and 3rd overall on the day.
